Build Site

This page describes in general how to build your own one-page website. Building a complex website is beyond the scope of this website. However, I've moved two websites from Verizon to Charter (requiring MANY changes).

Find a web host: The web host is the company that stores your website and makes it available on the internet. Most internet service providers (ISP's) provide free hosting services. Verizon provides space and interactive programs to create and modify websites. Charter provides space, but you have to create your website offline, then upload it to Charter, using your own software.

Build your first website:To get started, I suggest you follow the tutorials "Create your own personal home page" at the bottom of page "Video Tutorials". These tutorials help you build a home page containing links to all the webpages you frequently visit, organized into categories. Many websites want your website file to be called "index", so rename the file from "homepage.htm" to "index.htm", and put it in a folder, then upload the folder. Your uploaded home page will then be usable from any computer, ipad, iphone, etc. you have. Note that if your home page contains links to webpages stored on your computer, those links will not work after uploading.

Upload warning: Your ISP will describe several methods to upload your website. One of these is typing the FTP (file transfer protocol) command in the windows "start" menu box. I've had problems doing that and "experts" have confirmed this. I suggest you install a separate FTP program and use that. Some are free, I use SmartFTP (free 30 days, then $36).

Your ISP will provide you with the address to use to upload your website, and with the first part of the address (URL) to open your personal website on the internet. For the full address, use the supplied URL, then the folder name (a.k.a. website name) you chose. The file name is not required if it's named "index.htm" or "index.html". Example: the Charter url to open my website is "http://webpages.charter.net/tomspage/, the name of the folder containing this website is "TTNSite". The full address (URL) to open this website is therefore "http://webpages.charter.net/tomspage/TTNSite/" (DON'T TYPE THE QUOTES!!)
