Solve Computer Problems

This page has solutions to some common computer problems and answers for some questions you may have.  Some of the problems may have been fixed by the program developer, and some of the solutions may need "tweeking" because programs have changed.

These videos are in playlist:  Solve Computer problems

How To Unfreeze Your computer.
Shows how to safely kill a program or webpage that is freezing your computer.  Video:  "How To Use The Windows Task Manager To Unfreeze Your Computer".

Roll back time to eliminate problems from downloads/updates.  If your computer recently developed a problem, like a virus, search hijacker, etc., first try system restore to "roll back time" to before you had the problem. Run system restore.  Video:  "How To Run System Restore To Solve Computer Problems".

Gmail contacts are hilited.
Had this problem twice. To reset, just close gmail & reopen it.

Can't print with Internet Explorer version 9.
In internet explorer, select settings (the gear wheel in the upper right corner).
Select "internet options", select tab "advanced".
Check the box on the second line down.  "use software rendering...."
Click "OK"
Restart your computer.

Saved a web shortcut on the clipboard and lost it before I could paste it into an email.
To prevent this,
1.  Open the web page you want to email, create a shortcut to it on your desktop, by dragging the icon that's in the left end of the address box to an empty spot on your desktop.
2.  Now open your new email.  To get the link into the clipboard, right-click the shortcut, select properties.  The URL is probably already visible and hilighted.  If not navigate to it.  Then select it, use control-c to copy it to the clipboard.  Click in the text of your new email, then press control-v to paste the link.  To finish inserting a link, hilite the link's text in your email, then hover over the "send" line at the bottom, and click the "links" picture.

Lost internet, computer still works.  Messages may include "cable is unplugged",  "DNS server not responding", "website not responding", etc.
First check all internet cables.  If you have a spare cable, this would be a good time to use it.  Next, shut your computer off, unplug or turn off router, then the modem, turn modem on, wait 30 sec, turn on router..  Wait 1-2 minutes for them both to reset (green lights will blink, then settle down where they periodically blink quickly), turn on your computer, try your internet.  Repeat all steps if necessary.  If it still doesn't work, you may have to call your internet provider to come do their "special" reset.  To minimize this problem in the future, plug your modem & router into a (small) UPS.  If the router and computer are in the same room, plug them into the same UPS your computer (hopefully) is plugged into.  If you don't have a UPS for your computer, a catastrophe is waiting for you just around the corner.

Can't play a video.
If you can play some videos, but not others, either a video file is corrupted, or you don't have a player for that video format.  There are several free packages you can download from the internet.  Gom Player, VLC player, K-lite codec, etc.  The Media Classic player is included with some of those.  Be careful when you download any of these -- they'll grab all your video files if you're not careful with their options.  Also, don't accept any of those "extra" downloads they'll try to give you as you download - many of them cause problems.

Can't send email by clicking links in websites.
Set gmail as your email "handler", as described in Playlist:  How To Use Gmail .  Video:    "Gmail Part 7 Set Gmail As Your Email Handler.  This will fix this problem, and will save most emails you send in the "sent email" folder of gmail. Many commercial websites will bypass your email handler and use their own. You might want to copy those emails to a text file for archiving.

USB Printer prints slowly.

My Brother MFC 7420 USB multi-purpose laser printer suddenly began printing VERY slowly. 5-15 secs between pages. The problem was solved by plugging the printer directly into the computer, NOT into a USB hub. I used a USB 3.0 port, because the 2.0 ports were all in use. I think a USB 2.0 port (ON THE COMPUTER) would work also.
