Enter/Edit Text

These operations are used when editing text in a file, for changing an icon name, or editing text in a textbox.
DEFINITIONS

Insertion point:  Indicates where thped characters will be inserted(shows as a thin line cursor).

Selected text:   Text you've marked for copying/deleting. Selected text is hilited.
Clipboard:   Area where text that has been copied or deleted is stored for later pasting. The clipboard is preserved until something else is saved, or until your computer is restarted or shut down.

Obsolete topic - overstrike typing mode:  Word processors used to have a mode to allow you to type over text, instead of replacing.  This mode is seldom used today, and is not available in all word processors.  Today, instead of typing over text, you hilite it.  Then what you type replaces all of the hilited text.

Insert typing mode: (the default mode) -Typed characters are inserted at the insertion point (thin line cursor), causing following characters to shift to the right.

OPERATIONS
Set insertion point:   Click in the text where you want to insert new text. (shown as a thin cursor)
Delete key:   Deletes one character to the right of the insertion point. (apple users - "function-delete" does this on your computer)
Backspace key:   Deletes one character to the left of the insertion point. (apple users - "delete" does this on your computer)
Select word:   Double-click anywhere in a word.
Select sentence:   Triple-click anywhere in a sentence.
Select text by dragging:   Press and hold the left-mouse button where you want to start a text selection, drag the mouse over the text you want to select, then release the button. The text you dragged over is hilited. You may then copy or delete it, as described below.
Select icon name:  (name is shown below an icon for a shortcut, folder, or file - Click the icon, pause, slick the name below the icon.  Once the name is selected, you may click within the selected text to insert chars, or may retype the entire name.  For a file icon, this changes the file name.  DO NOT CHANGE the extension for a file. (The extension follows the last period in the filename.)
Delete text:   Select the text, then press control-x. (can also use the "edit" menu -- deleted text is copied to the clipboard)
Copy text:   Select the text, then press control-c (can also use the "edit menu" -- text is copied to the clipboard and is not deleted).
Paste copied or deleted text:  (same as inserting text) - Set the insertion point, or select text to be replaced; press control-v (can also use the "edit" menu).  Text from the clipboard will then be inserted.
Notes:   Text saved to clipboard by control-c or control-x is saved until you restart your computer -- you can open/close applications and later paste this text. Hiliting text then retyping it, or deleting hilited text with the delete or backspace keys does not affect text previously copied to the clipboard
