Getting To Know Your Browser

Browsers are the programs that display webpages as you surf the net. Windows comes with the Internet Explorer Browser (IE) (Windows 10 includes the Edge Browser), and there are many free browsers available for download to your computer. Most of you are familiar with at least some browser features (because you are, after all, reading this text in a browser).  But you may not be aware of all the features your browser has that can make your "surfing" easier, and you may have only used IE. These video tutorials show how to use features with the IE, Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari browsers.   Click here to open the channel page , locate the section you want, then open the playlists, then click the videos to view them.

Windows 10 update:There's a new playlist: "How To Use The Firefox Browser Windows 10", and the new name for the Windows 7 version is "How To Use The Firefox Browser Windows 7". Also, there's a new playlist "How To Use The Edge Browser". The Apple Safari Browser has been discontinued for Windows 10.

How to use this page:  There are MANY tutorials about browsers. Here are some viewing suggestions.

If you're familiar with at least one browser, and want to try other browsers, read paragraph "How to install a browser" first, then install the browsers you want.

If you're just starting with computers or a new browser, you should watch the first 5 videos in "Getting To Know Your Browser" tutorials (maybe hold the last 2 until later), then, if you are starting to use Chrome, IE, Edge, or Firefox browsers, watch the playlist for that browser.

If you've been using the Chrome, I.E, Edge, or Firefox browser for awhile and are fairly familiar with it, you might just want to view the tutorials for that browser to make sure you haven't overlooked any useful features.

How To Install A Browser.I recommend you install the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers. Open the browser's website, then navigate to the browser download page.  Be sure you download the version for your operating system (Windows 7, 8, or 10). When downloading, be sure to answer correctly all questions about the software you are running. Ask to "save" the download. The load file is saved in your "downloads" folder. With some browsers, you must then open the downloaded exe installation file. With others, they'll load automatically. I suggest you answer "yes" to "is it ok for program xxx to make changes to your computer?", "yes" to "Create a desktop shortcut?","no" to "Make me your default browser?", and then install it to the default location.

WARNING:
You should decline ALL of those extra "goodies", toolbars, search engines, etc that will be offered to you during installation, unless you know EXACTLY what it is, and KNOW you REALLY NEED IT!!  Some of the extras react very badly with other software on your computer, most of them do more harm than good.  Some browsers set their "pet" home pages.  You should set your own home page after you install each browser.

The I.E. and Edge browsers are included with Windows 10, but you'll need to create a shortcut for the I.E. browser, as described in video "Upgrading Windows 7 To Windows 10 Part 1a Browsers For Windows 10", in playlist ""Upgrading From Windows 7 To Windows 10". Safari is a good browser for Windows 7, but Apple has discontinued support for new Windows versions. Try each browser for awhile. When you decide which you like best, make that your default browser.

Opening your browser.

You can open a browser by clicking "Start" (or the Windows Logo), then
either click its name in the start list, or type its name in the search box, and press "enter"  (if the browser is hilited), or click its name in the searchbox list.

The BEST way (by far) is to pin the browser to the taskbar and open it there.  (Described below in "Create Browser Shortcuts". )

Opening a browser shortcut will open the browser showing its "home page".  Opening a webpage shortcut will open that page using the default browser.  Exception:  shortcuts created from the IE browser always open that page with the IE browser, regardless of the default browser setting.

WARNING:  You can open many programs by dragging file icons onto the program icon, but be warned:   Dragging a shortcut will NOT open a page in the Safari browser, and will sometimes hang up Firefox, forcing you to turn off your computer.
